The Races

Gentleman at the racesAfter six years touring America Lillie hankered after England and Jersey.

Lillie bought a racehorse and decided to race it.

Jockey Club rules forbade women owners so she registered as Mr Jersey.

As with most of Lillies ventures her horses made money for her, most noticeably Merman who won the Cesarewitch the Ascot Gold Cup, the Goodwood cup and the ironically the Jockey Club Cup.

Lillie was never short of admirers, one of the darker characters in Lillies life was Squire Abingdon a wealthy man with an uncontrollable temper.

He hit Lillie on occasion and then in his remorse would buy her back with gifts including a race horse and a one hundred and twenty foot steam yacht called The White Layde.
